SAES students painting in art classThe mission of the Hanover County Schools Visual Arts Program is to engage students in thinking creatively and solving problems in order to communicate visually in the 21st century. The universal language of art allows students to make connections and comprehend themes of expression around the world, past and present.

Art at SAES

Ashley Phipps serves as our art teacher. Students in grades K–5 at South Anna Elementary School attend art once a week for 45 minutes, while preschool students have an art lesson for 30 minutes once a week. The art program at South Anna Elementary is designed to provide students an opportunity to express their unique thoughts, ideas, and emotions. We teach a wide range of art techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and crafts to students at every level.

Art helps students make connections to history, math, science, and literature and allows them to discover different cultures and respond to the world around them. At South Anna, every student can achieve success in art.

We send artwork home throughout the year. We save many pieces, however, to display in the hallways and throughout the community at various art shows.
