Mrs. Elizabeth Verlander is excited to have joined the South Anna family as assistant principal. This is her 17th year in education in Hanover County Public Schools. From 2016-2018, Mrs. Verlander served as the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher(ITRT) at Battlefield Park Elementary School, Cold Harbor Elementary School, and Laurel Meadow Elementary School. While serving in this role, Mrs. Verlander worked closely with students prek-5th, as well as with their many teachers and administrative teams. Prior to that appointment, Mrs. Verlander taught 15 years at Washington Henry Elementary School teaching kindergarten and first Grade.

Mrs. Verlander is a forever learner and believes in the power of positive relationships. She was nominated as Washington Henry’s Beginning Teacher of the Year when her career in education first began in 2001. She was later nominated by her colleagues on three separate occasions to represent their school community as Teacher of the Year. She was also a former R.E.B. finalist. She is committed to continuous learning and supporting both staff and students in reaching their fullest potential.

Mrs. Verlander holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master of teaching in elementary education, and a post-master’s certificate in educational leadership all from Virginia Commonwealth University. She most recently completed all requirements of the Metropolitan Educational Teacher’s Alliance (META) Teacher Leadership Program earning her the state’s teacher leader designation.

Mrs. Verlander grew up in Mechanicsville and is a proud product of Hanover County Public Schools. She currently resides in Mechanicsville with her loving husband, Chris, and their five-year-old son, Bentley. In her free time, Elizabeth loves getting lost in great books, exploring new technologies, shopping, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite summer places to be are reading a good book on the beach and partaking in river activities (boating, fishing, crabbing, and swimming) with her loved ones. Elizabeth looks forward to getting to know all South Anna Elementary School staff, students, parents, and community members.
